Meeting up with UNDISPUTED KING OF THE UNDERGROUND
Still undisputed King of the Underground
He set the rock n` roll trends back in the 80`s, when he
filled the scene with one hit after another and left nobody equanimous. A
rocker in his late fifties, holding also some punk in his blood, decided to
prove he ain`t one of those names, who were huge only under the rule of rock.
Billy Idol got down to it, for he didn`t only finish his autobiography Dancing
with myself, but also started touring in Europe, North America and Australia,
where he is about to present something fresh, his album Kings & Queens of the Underground.
After almost ten years blonde-haired Brit decided to show
his music once again, while he spent those years forgotten, somewhere in the
background. Without a cause at all. His music could always be described as
something more than rock and not only punk. Idol liked combining different
music genres and styles and which could even cost him his career. After
Cyberpunk, 1993 album, which was badly approved by the public, he started
fading away, but in the final moment got himself in back together and back on
track. He returned in 2005, but even Devil`s playground didnt work according to
expectations.
When he thought he`d give it all away and probably turned
down finding some new melodies, the time has come to meet the Kings & Queens of the Underground. Even
the darkened title is a promise for a good deal of some „Billy“ style, but yet
it might sometimes stay under the surface. The album might be some kind of a
mixture of everything, we`re yet used to at Billy and might recognize it in
some newer image. Good ol` Rebel yell is now Postcards from the past, which
joins great rhytm and guitar intro, creating good vibes in the beggining and
attention grabbing chorus. Even talkative Whiskey and the pills seems to be
pretty energetic, besides guitar accompainment, which were carefully driven by
Idol`s longtime associate and also one of the guitar heroes of the rock era
Steve Stevens, the lyrics seem to be huge bonus of this piece.
Billy also took care of fans of his milder side. Ghosts in
my guitar (nobody knows, if there were really any ghosts in that guitar, but
nevermind, it sounds pretty cool with or without them) is a deja-vu of Eyes
without a face, Idol˙s vocal gets in some point so pure and clear, it`s hardly
recognizable. But no worries, Billy sticks to his raspy vocal colour as much as
he`s dedicated to his blonde hair colour. There he goes in Eyes wide shut,
another calmer balad, where intense guitar accompainment and Billy`s vibrato
makes it so enchanted.
Kings & Queens of the Underground, the song which named
the whole album, seemed to go through some facts on Idol`s life and for its
vocal lines it might even sound a bit like opera. Well, it doesn`t take too
long before the lyrics prove you`re wrong. But yet the flute might be too much
for the old rocker. Nothing to fear,
Love and glory and Save me now, in which rhytm might sound more like dance and
the whole arrangement sounds too modern despite the loud guitars. Even the
electric change of the voice might be to blame in Nothing to fear. It might
even make you feel like you`re listening to one of those DJ compilations. Well,
thank you Billy for the Can`t break me down and Bitter Pill, which changes the
taste in our mouths and gets everybody a good taste of old punkrock
masterpieces from the past decades. Growing rhytm followed by climax in the
catchy chorus is great, but the best part seems to be „it`s just my natural
reaction“. His vocal is well placed in
this one and it sure is a proof Billy is the one you just ca`t be down. Even
down there he still is the King of the Underground.
This year might be pretty royal for blonde punkrocker. Album
promises many different things, what`s a fact about Billy and what might be his
bad side, for sometimes he wants to sound in the way what`s currently
„charts-popular“ way to much. It might be the beginning of some new branch of
punk rock, because the album took high places on Billboard charts, and yet
received different reviews. For what it might be referred to rock or punk or
whatever and if we add it was made by two old rock n` roll legends, the whole
thing might be a little low on the guitar solos and other sweet things the six
strings offers. There`s only a question why, for Stevens stretches his fingers
on the gigs pretty well.
British Fall Out Boy seemed to be on the back pages too many
times in the late music history. Despite his influences on many performers and
as a matter of fact, he was also a fashion icon, he spent his time searching
for some modern tones in his music. So, those, who want to repeat some older
hits once again, should probably join Billy on his gig, but others, ready to
taste something new, should sooner or later open their minds to the King of the
Underground.

Kid`s Pit: A REBEL WITH HIS YELL
A Rebel with his yell
It only took couple of riffs to
guess which song is about to take part of the show. Strings were just about to
burn and so it was the stage. The heat almost reached the top, hands were right
up in the air and the only thing missing was the blonde rebel take of his
shirt. He made his yell sound even more rebelious. The view was almost the same
as decades before, when the yell first came to sound. Only this time, red
leather vest was missing.
Billy Idol is still blonde, still
knows how to dance with himself, only he`s in late fifties now and yet this
time there were many people dancing along. One of the first crusaders, who
started to form the path of punk in Great Britain, used to be huge rock n` roll
icon back in the 80s and yet he still knows how to do it. After he filled the
place up few years ago, he decided to do it again. Only this time it sounded
more idolized. Why? Well, you might wanna go and ask Steve Stevens. Who? Yeah,
same Stevens, who was probably guilty for Idol`s songs to reach sound we still
got in our ears and yet the same Stevens, who still makes you believe, the guy
was probably born with picker in his hands or at least something like that. The
show was noisy, punk and rocking again.
British Fall Out Boy started to rock
the 25th of June 2014 with some tones from the underground. He
opened the show with few songs from
Kings & Queens of the Underground, which was about to come to
reality later that year. All covered in the black leather, just as rocker like
himself should be, he took over the mic and also the crowd. Hot in the city
could probably now be reffered to Hot in the Tivoli hall. After few big hits,
such as Dancing with myself, White wedding and Mony Mony which left visitors
still some 80`s taste in their mouths, there was time for Billy to show his
guitar skills. With Stevens covering his back in guitar accompainment, he
proved he could still made Sweet 16 sound convincingly emotional. Same as Eyes
without a face, where he put aside his raspy tones and softly but with depth
sang lower tones and then slided to upper ones with lightness and yet
sensibilty. After all, that sounds pretty much like ol` Billy, who`s just a fan
of combining different things to find the right sound. Surprise was also
Stevens. After King of underground`s departure from the stage, Stevens took
care of the crowd and continued with the idolization.
He showed everything he`s got,
playing over his head, behind his back and so fast one could hardly follow.
From slowly wandering through some evergreen guitar riffs, such as Led
Zeppelin`s Stairway to heaven, to going on and on, faster and faster, he
showed, he`s really cruciable part of the rebellious night, which tastes as
some old rock n` roll. When Billy changed and got back on the stage, the party
went on.
It didn`t take long, before the
atmosphere was the same as before. And it got even crazier when the time for
the most famous yell came. Though the first rows under the stage were taken by
fans, who grew with Idol`s music, it didn`t seem as the time passed by at all.
They were pointing their hands up in the air, just as you`d find yourself in
the middle of the Rebel yell video. When Billy took his shirt off and showed he
also got almost no trace on his well-shaped body, they were as one. When Billy
stretched his face muscles and got his vocal screams back, they were jumping
and screaming, trying to reach him on the stage. Well he stepped on the stair
above the floor and started doing well-familiar move with his fist in the
rhytm. Everybody continued.
„Me... I`m a Billy fucking Idol,“
he ishouted after he introduced his band to the visitors. After Billy`s danced
with himself in his autobiography and opened his heart in underground, we could guess, what`s coming next.
Well, he`s sure not finished all the chapters. At least one more is about to
come. That`s how he promised: „See you next year!“

MusiKid: MAGICIAN
Magician
Hi, folks! It`s time to sing a song again, well it`s time to write a song actually, I am presenting one piece, I wrote quite a long time ago and I guess its not pretty connected all together, but I suppose it`s just highlighting what I was thinking back then.
I give you Magician.
I can feel deep inside
is sound of a broken heart
Somewhere deep inside
I can see round and round
The world is cyrcling around me now
I can see round and round
I can taste broken dreams they're filled with salty
tears
I can taste broken dreams
And I can feel deep blue sea
Taking me cuz I can't pull any strings
I can feel deep blue sea
I can say nothing now cuz everything seems empty
somehow
I can say nothing now
I can stand in a row wait for the mercy I'm beggar
now
I can stand in a row
And I can make children cry cuz everything in me
just died
I can make children cry
And I can take my bags but I can't fly cuz here it
all started from a lie
Chorus
I wanna fly
Away right now
Don't wake me up
Don't make it stop
Say those magic words and make the heaven drop
I can count days that passed and I curse from the
first to the last
I can count days that passed
And I can touch my balantine you broke my heart, my
valentine
I can touch balantine
I can pray every day to get on the feet and get away
I can pray every day
I knew it from the start we were meant to be taken
part
I knew it from the start
I was closing my eyes I didn't want my rose to die
I was closing my eyes
But the dark was too bright to weep so I had to wake
from my sleep
The dark was too bright to keep
And now everythings left to desert and vein I'm
making a move to change the despair

Kid`s Kit: WE WILL QUEEN YOU!
We will Queen you!
Hi everybody, The Kids back on track, except this week in some kind of a Queen image. Since I found myself a Queen topic this month, I didn`t mimic the whole technological-Gaga image or the whole Scaramouche thing, but I wanted to depict the kind of images, familiar with those in more artistic opera-theatre kind videos, and so I`ve decided to fit into royal costumes and present you the Queen side of me.

Meeting up with: THE QUEEN IN PERSON
The Queen in person
The first thing coming to my mind, when someone mentioned
Queen or Freddie Mercury, was a strange name of a strange moustache-wearing guy
with a strange style. We used to have one of The greatest hits casette back
home and on the inside, there was a well-known picture (I figured that out
couple of years later) of Freddie in his cat-imaged vest. He wasn`t wearing
moustache on that picture, but I knew that was the guy, because he was the only
one back then I knew under the term „special“. Well, the thing is, as soon as I
started digging deeper into music, I liked Queen. I just didn`t know why that
was so. And as soon as I found out I like it, I put a line of what I call good
music a little higher, than I knew. And
that line is still pretty hard to reach. Well, it may be a detail, I forgot to
tell and it might be the key. The thing Freddie died before I was born made me
think different of him and everytime I listened to his music, I thought how I
never could hear him again. And as I was younger, I couldn`t imagine, how a
guy, with such a „fortune“ could die so early yet with so much to give. And
that`s the way I listened to him. Everytime as I hear him for the last time and
as I have to determine and listen very close, because I can`t have another
chance to change my mind.
Funny, I know, but it seems to me, even back then I figured
it`s quite a deal to beat Freddie. Not only because of his amaizing charisma
and apperance on the stage. Not at all, his vocal technique and let`s put a bit
aside his wide vocal range (because that`s what he`s mostly referred to), he
could sing with so much passion and in the other moment, he could sound so
fragile, but yet always with confidence and class. Who could find a better name
for that than a Queen? Maybe due to We will rock you musical I saw back in
school days or it might be listening to all kinds of mimics and karaoke and
such. After I watched the Freddie Mercury tribute concert and after I visited
the Queen gig with Adam Lambert, my thoughts came clear. Well, now I see, why
everybody calls Freddie irreplaceable. I know it`s difficult to stand into
someone`s shoes, when he used to die in his glory and he was so popular and yet
with such talent, but he really knew how to do it. Let`s see why.
Besides all the music genres I like and listen to, I`m also
a great fan of classical music and opera as such. I recall, when I was little,
once I decided, I was about eight I think, well I decided to go to opera and
made my mother go with me. It was rare occasion, I could go to bed after 9 p.m.
and it seemed so classy to me. I liked the way I could be acting in the opera
and I liked the way I was dressed. I even could taste a bit of champagnemy mama
got in the opera cafe, so I still got the tickets of Fedora we watched back
then. But especially I liked the whoel story on the stage, I was taken by the
whole story, told in the other language, I was familiar with. In the language
of music. And maybe even back then, I developed this love for tragic, melanholic
characters, I still prefer. I liked different characters, drags, being always
someone else, taking different challenging identitites and I loved this rich
scne eont he stage. Thats why I still like classical pieces. Well the music, I
always liked Chopin and Schumann for their emotions and Mozart and even Bach
for their music full of „decorations“ of any kind. And so is with opera. Always
dynamic. Always something happening.
Well I put that down, because the best reference I find to
compare Freddie`s music is opera. He changed notes so quickly, he changes
volume, he changes the rhytm, so it takes a precise listener, to follow it and
try to understand it later to appreciate it. Confident prince in one moment, in
the next one fragile desperate lover, and in the next rock god! But always he`s
been singing with such passion and with so mush feelings, so this might be the
thing why he`s so hard to beat. Not only Bohemian rhapsody, also Hard life and
Breakthrough are my favourites, because one could hardly find some sort of
pattern, appearing in all the songs. Maybe that`s because there ain`t one.
Every piece is a piece by itself. I remember when I got (some years after the
cassette) the cd Greatest hits 2 by Queen, I learned all the songs by heart. I
was fascinated by Hard life and Breaktrough how the beginning gives impression
of completely different song and then it flows into different rhytm.
Compeletely different and so dynamic. Let`s say We will rock you. Wonderful
proof of dyinamc song and experimenting. Sail away sweet sister, Who wants to
live forever and Show must go on, well these remain very close to me, for so
many emotions in them and they sound so clear and so honest. With no extra
over-reactions and pomp around the emotions and feelings and all. Straight just
the way things are. Just like one of my favourites, Love of my life.
Something to do with his persona, also the whole character
of Freddie is fascinating. So far from anything compared ti music environment,
he later worked in, but he succeded for his outstanding will and talent, though
first Queen`s albums were not well accepted and though his sexual orientation,
which was back then important thing determining someone`s career. Beyond that,
he managed to put all aside and in the heart of it it was only about music and
good energy. And this music is still binding people together from all sorts of
places, all kinds of people, long after he left.
I read somewhere he had incredible ability to play the tones
he heard on the radio and since always he thought he was special. When he was
staying in Munich, he allegedly said hello to random people he met on the
streets. Even his very strong „man“ persona was seen in his costumes and
gestures. A real chameleon, in his videos and concerts, he changed so many
outfits, just like this is really some sort of theatre and hes got lots of
shows to do. But yet his vulnerability and sensitivity was always seen. Mostly,
when he sang with his eyes closed. Such sounds came right from his heart. Just
before he passed, when Those were the days of our lives were recorded and he was
really weak, they say he would be gone much sooner if he wouldn`t have so much
to give. They say it was his creativity keeping him alive. I say it was his
heart.

Kid`s Pit: GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!
Kid`s Pit: GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!
The announcement about British rock band Queen coming on stage again was followed by question if this is really about the same great old band. Well, after all the doubts are gone and wherever you search for tickets, their famous logo conquered most of the webstores, another question suddenly appears. How are they gonna do it, since their legend is gone for 24 years.
Heading to Stadthalle in Vienna, where on the 1st
of February Queen pulled off another gig during their sold out tour, was
somehow different for all old-school fans, who already went ti see some great
concerts or they`ve managed to see the Queen during their golden royal times.
Beside casual issues, such as casual battle for the first row and how to resist
low temperatures during few hours long waiting for the doors to open, the
concert bus was full of expectations how the Queen opera is about to take place
without the lead actor, director and the first vocal of evening. Freddie
Mercury.
Royal spectacle
In Freddie`s sneakers got Adam Lambert, American singer,
famous for his performances in American Idol show. Remained members of the
original band warmly welcomed him and so the Queen performed for the 10th
time in Vienna, 7 times they did it with Freddie and twice they shared the
stage with Paul Rodgers. Bass player
John Deacon didn`t take part of concert.
The concert scene in Vienna was filled with 13.000 excited
fans on the day of the gig and just before it was about to start they wandered
if May is going to switch his picker with coin and if Taylor already turned his
stick on the right side in left hand. The suspicions were gone when the
curtain, decorated with the band`s logo, fell down and the stage was conquered
by the lead actors. Lambert, covered in black leather with golden spikes and
sunglasses started the concert exactly the same way as in 1986. With One
vision. Without looking too close, one could figure, if it might be Freddie on
the stage, Lambert had the dynamic moves and he ruled the whole stage in a
second. For the perfect show, he even had the moustache. Brian wasn`t difficult
to recognize due to his well-known haircut, which after all the gigs got even
more charm and reminds us we are surely dealing with a great legend of rock.
But May kept his passion and persistance in playing just as all the years
before. Roger`s snare was also loud and it was not only his fault, he was
supported by another loud drummer force, his 23-year old son Rufus Tiger, who
later even joined him in drum battle. Lambert prepaired for the show just as he
would be reading Freddie`s manual and adding some of his own ideas. During the
sounds of Killer Queen he layed down on the huge purple sofa and resembled
women`s moves. He even opened the bottle of Dom Perignon and spilled it over
the fans in the first row. Fat Bottomed
girls shook the place with some more country and the energy enhanced in I want
to break free and Somebody to love, when Lambert got to the highest tones with
extreme power and asked to finally to get him somebody to love few times in a
row. His manageable vibrato sounded as opera as Freddie could do it and yet
Lambert was low on falsetto, the technique, Freddie was great at. The result
was Adam developing some more pop-like, melodious sound. He proved despite his
singing he got some moves too.
The accompainment was more sounding like pure Queen, using
less computer as with Rodgers, and bass
player, filling in Deacon also gets credit for that. After Taylor, his son and
May played and sang 39, the older part of Taylor family sang A kind of magic. Fans helped him with
excitement for he managed to take the them all back to some past times and
proved those ain`t over yet using some magic and some raspy vocals. One of the climaxes
was done by May. First he talked to fans in German and after they responded
with great excitement and huge applause, he apparently moved sang to them Love
my life. With such sensuality, he could managed the guitar, he calmed the whole
scene. And later, the magic occured, such as May predicted. In the background
of the stage, suddenly Freddie`s image appeared. After sang the final chorus,
took a bow and, waved to fans, the whole place was almost silenced for a moment
and then followed by one of the loudest applauses of that night.
Still undisputed champions
Under pressure was another crucial part and also I want it
all and Who wants to live forever, when Lambert, who changed his costumes for
few times, sang under huge crystal ball. Sounds of Radio Gaga drove all the
members in front and the famous chorus was accompained with clapping hands,
well Lambert jumped in the crowd. The first measures of world`s most famous
rhapsody dragged everybody into some old times again and the loudest applause
deserved the great „deus ex machina“ closing, when Freddie sang from the
background again and Lambert accompained him, lifting in the air. Due to the
royal performance, Lambert returned on stage in new outfit, ready to do some
more arias. He literally crowned himself for the queen of the night for he wore
big sparkling crown on his head. But we`re used to that. It`s about band, full
of magic, love and prestige. Pure baroque. As in melodies as in costumes. The
comeback was marked with We will rock you and the sudden end almost expectedly
continued into the first chords of We are the champions. After almost three
hours of show, the place was filled with confetti and all the hands were in the
air. Lambert contributed some oh his own style to the performance full of
nostalgic moment. He wore even more extravagant outfits and sang with even more
popular tones, that`s why his songs were full of vivid moves and outstanding
vocal decorations, but sometimes some more emotional tones were missing. The
ones fans still sing to themselves. The band
proved their royalness once again. And altough Adam may not be Freddie, his
show is after all these years still going on.
